This book is just a lot of laughs. I found it a fun read Mar 10, Margaret rated it it was amazing Shelves: Denise Swanson has another winner.

Swanson second series, and it is good as the Scumble River Mysteries. This is the third one in the Devereaux's Dime Store Mysteries, but it can stand alone.

Dev Sinclair was a successful business woman who gives up her well paying job to come home and take care of her grandmother.

Without giving anything way, Dev and her two boyfriends search for the killer who is complete surprise. I usually can figure out the culprit but this one was a complete surprise.

This is a wonderful cozy mystery. The romance in the book is fun. Dev and her grandmother are delightful. Every series has to have a character you love to hate, and this is no exception.

Swanson makes you care for her characters which makes this series for me. Buy or check out of the library this book and enjoy a wonderful read.

Mar 14, Anastasia rated it really liked it. After giving a presentation to a book club at Devereaux's dime store, an obnoxious local poet and writer is found dead and dumped in the garbage behind the store.

I enjoyed the book and catching up with all the characters again and I liked the different narratives from the various characters. The love triangle spoilt the book for me though and hopefully it will be resolved soon.

I am looking forwar Dead between the lines by Denise Swanson is the 3rd book in a Devereaux Dime store Mystery series. I am looking forward to reading the next book and seeing Devereaux's relationship with her father develop further, now that he has been released from prison.

Feb 06, Edel rated it it was amazing. When I started this series I did not think I could love a series as much as Denise's other series set in Scumble River, but I have fallen in love with this Deveraux Dime series and its characters , esp Deveraux who is a cool curvy chick.

Fantastic book, loved it! I love every one of these books! Jul 18, Nancy H rated it liked it. A good mystery set in Deveraux's Dime Story, this story takes place when a man is murdered right after leaving a book club event in Dev's store.

She is called to come back to her store in the middle of the night, because the police found the man in a box right outside her back door.

The victim has offended many people in many ways, so there are many who would like to see him silenced. Jun 04, Mayda rated it really liked it Shelves: Dev owns and runs a dime store that really is much more. She makes gift baskets to order, and hosts a variety of meetings, including a book discussion group.

But things go awry at the discussion, and the guest speaker causes a ruckus with unfortunate results. Trying to keep her store running smoothly while caring for her grandmother and dating two very eligible guys has Dev burning the midnight oil and then some.

Highly entertaining, this cozy is one for the books. Sep 14, Ali rated it it was ok Shelves: I liked this series when I first started it a few years ago, but I just couldn't get in to this story.

Maybe it's because I let too much time pass in between reading installments, but I struggled to get through it and it didn't capture my attention.

Oct 30, Sue rated it really liked it. Although the plot was a bit twisted, I really enjoyed all the idiosyncrasies of the folks in this book.

I like the fact too that while the heroine did discover the murdered, she did not realize at the time that she was doing so. Mar 05, Emily Ste rated it really liked it.

Love me some Denise Swanson. Whether it's the Dime Store series or the Scumble River series, you can count me in.

My only request is that Devereaux pick between Jake or Noah already!! Dec 25, Sara Smith rated it really liked it.

I liked this book the most so far in the series because it focused more on the mystery and less on the romantic entanglements of the detective. Mar 06, Delores Alger rated it liked it.

She writes a good cozie. Ok Not the best of this series. A bit heavy on the attraction to 2 men, which is best.

The murderer was all too evident. Oct 02, Sarah rated it it was amazing. Wonderful characters, wacky crimes, and a picturesque setting make these easy and fun to read.

I enjoyed this series continuation but it reminds me a lot of Hannah Swenson's situation with her two boyfriends one a dentist and one a cop series written by Joanne Fluke.

At least this series won't make me fat with all those yummy recipes. Mar 02, Tamara rated it really liked it Shelves: So, Dev is trying to make the money while the sun is shining- which is why she opens up the Dime Store to clubs for bit of extra cash.

The first book club meeting, though, may be the last- as the members get peeved with the author for his attitude toward women and small-town life.

Dev knew many were peeved when they left, but she did not know who was peeved enough to kill the author or why they did it- was it because of the book club meeting?

Or is there much more to this story? What Dev knows is this: With a little help from the good doctor, Noah, and the hunk-alicious Deputy US Marshall, Jake- Dev is sure to get to the bottom of this mess, quick, fast and in a hurry.

Which leaves her to think about other things- such as who is the yin to her yang? I enjoy the Dime Store Mystery series! Dev has hit a groove with me in reading and I found myself not comparing to Scumble River as I have in the past.

Getting to know Jake and Noah a bit, through their own thoughts and not the actions we see in the Dev chapters, added a bit to this book.

Right now, the love triangle with Dev, Noah and Jake is fine. A nice cozy mystery with some great characters. Definitely add this to the TBR list!

All thoughts and opinions are mine alone. The victim in this book is view spoiler [Lance Quistgaard, a poet who comes to Dev's Dime Store at the invitation of a book club.

To add insult to injury and karma he wrote a softcore porn book about their relationship that was a mega hit think 50 Shades of Gray , which humiliated the prim and proper store clerk, despite the fact it was not immediately obviously about her hide spoiler ].

Good things about this book: We see progress with Kern Sinclair being released from jail, which doesn't happen until the end. Gran has fixed up the apartment above the garage for him to live in, and her memory seems to be doing better.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Dev's relationship with her father progresses. Boone and Poppy are both out of town, so I missed seeing Dev's best friends.

This does give her a bit more time to focus on the investigation, and Jake is more present in this book -- he's actually considering quitting being a US Marshal and staying to work on his uncle Tony's ranch.

Noah is very focused on his mother, Nadine, who appears to be having health problems, but he does manage to help out Dev a bit. Bear's ability to incorporate scientific concepts into tightly woven, fast-paced story lines reaches menacing new proportions here, because it draws on that nagging suspicion that the ubiquitous, innocent-appearing cell phone may really be killing off its users.

By deftly extrapolating that doubt into everyone's most dreaded fears-loss of job, loss of friends, loss of children-Bear reanimates the old story of Faust, who sold his soul for unlimited knowledge and power, hinting ominously that the price of rampant technology may be dearer than we think.

In perhaps his most mainstream novel to date, Nebula Award winner Bear envisions what might happen should a new technology open the floodgates on another dimension.

In the near future, the technology in question is the "trans," a sort of souped-up cell phone with near-infinite bandwidth and perfect reception anywhere in the world.

Peter Russell is a washed-up director of soft porn, living on handouts and reeling from the death of his closest friend, when the device's manufacturers offer him a chance to revamp his career and film their promotional videos.

One of the assignment's perks is, of course, a batch of free trans phones--a blessing that may actually harbor a curse.

For Peter begins to unravel and to see ghostly simulacra of both the living and the dead. Is he losing his mind, or have the trans' inventors tapped into a force that literally bends minds and even reality?

Bear's masterful prose, effectively chilling and reminiscent of Koontz at his best, makes this a good pick for sf and horror fans.

This book is haunting, in so many good ways that to begin to list them will delay you from delving into the book sooner.

Do yourself a favor and read this book, then let me know what you think. One person found this helpful. One of Bear's more overlooked works - I highly recommend it if you're up for a well-written ghost story novella set in Los Angeles County.

This is a re-publication of this book that was originally published in I am glad that it is being re-introduced to readers.

I buy quite a few of Greg Bear's books because the book summaries always sound so good whoever writes his summaries deserves a raise. And then I end up usually being disappointed - always forgetting that hard science fiction is not my cup of tea.

But not this time. This book is exceptionally good. BUT it's not hard sci fi so that's probably the key. Peter Russell is 58 years old.

He used to direct soft porn movies, has tried rather unsuccessfully being a writer and also failed as a husband. He has been doing errands for his millionaire neighbors for quite a few years.

But life has dumped a load of bad happenings on him over the last couple of years and when he's offered a job with a start-up tech company, he needs the money and the distraction.

But his troubles are far from over. I loved that book and periodically re-read it. But I liked this book - a lot.

It is a creepy "what if" tale that had me turning on lights to chase away the shadows in the corners of the room. I liked protagonist Russell.

I liked the pacing of the story. Don't go into it expecting explanations of some of the happenings.
